Letter from the Coach:

My name is Tia Blachowski, and I will be leading the new Spinner Sharks Landsharks team this season. We are excited to welcome young runners from schools in the Ford Frick Park area to have fun, develop running skills, and achieve personal goals together. As head coach, I am thrilled to be a part of the positive culture the Landsharks organization contributes to our Colorado Springs athletic community. With over a decade of professional coaching and sports medicine experience, I am excited to work with an organization that has helped the inclusive development of hundreds of thousands of young athletes. Getting started in athletics with positive and healthy experiences can help children build powerful lifelong skills. Successes with team settings, leadership, and personal physical goals all contribute to the self efficacy and self esteem children use to develop independence and intrinsic motivation. Finding empowerment in athletic environments at a young age can prevent negative associations with physical activity and can lead to healthier, more active lifestyles later in life. My husband, Nick, and I are fortunate for our own son to benefit from the safe, empowering dynamic modeled by Landsharks ethics. I look forward to your kiddo learning and growing as a runner under my assistant coach, Skye Ciccarelli, who is not only a wonderful coaching professional but also an accomplished track and field athlete. It's hard to believe summer is almost over, but our Landsharks fall season is fast approaching! This season's team parent meeting will occur after our first practice on Wednesday, April 10th at 5:15pm to answer any questions and clarify details about our season. Practices will be every Wednesday and Friday from 4:30pm-5:15pm at [Ford Frick Park] with our last practice being a team celebration running day on Wednesday, May 8th. Participants will be dropped off and picked up near the main parking lot beside the swing sets. Running meets will be at Chinook Trail Middle Schooll, 1pm on Sundays: April 21st, April 28th and May 5th. Registration is now open, and we are excited to share an excellent season together!

Weather policies

Landsharks Lightning Policy

1. We will monitor the weather via the Weather Bug App with Spark Function.

2.  Activities shall be immediately suspended, and all personnel directed to move to a safe area when the meter indicates lightning is within an 8-mile radius.

3. If the device fails or connectivity is poor, we will suspend activity when cloud-to-ground lightning is observed OR thunder is heard.  We will quickly direct staff, participants and athletes to pre-determined shelter(s).

4. Once the practice/meet has been cancelled, please look out for communication from your coach as to where immediate pick up will occur or other pertinent information.

5. Please share the safety plan with others picking up your athlete.

6. Understand the evacuation process depending on the site layout.

7. Please look for communication from your coach regarding a possible makeup practice/meet.

Cold Weather Policy

It is important to note that the following guidelines for activity apply only in the absence of rain and/or snow.  Rain/snow in conjunction with low temperatures and wind can make conditions unsafe. Therefore, in weather conditions involving rain/snow, the decisions about participation restrictions will be made by the coach or site director

Facility and field regulations will take precedence overstated rules. It is the responsibility of the on-site coach or site director to monitor the weather conditions. The coach/site director will utilize the WeatherBug®,  mobile app, or equivalent resource which provides live and forecast data on weather conditions and temperatures.

Cold weather recommendations:

  • Outside participation limited to 45 minutes – Temperature or wind chill, whichever is lower, reaches 25˚F. If precipitation is present, the time on the field may need to be modified or suspended when taking into consideration the effects of precipitation in cold temperatures.
  • Termination of outside participation – Temperature or wind chill, whichever is lower, reaches 18˚F.

Meet Guidelines

In order to create a safe environment for our Landshark runners and families, please adhere to the following guidelines for our races. These guidelines are in place to help keep our races organized and fun for the kids and parents.

  1. Please park in designated areas only.
  2. Upon arrival, please locate your runner(s) school coach to receive race bib and then parents must proceed to designated spectator viewing area.  The only adults allowed on in the infield are coaches and/or volunteers with a Landsharks' T-shirt.
  3. Exchange runners should check-in with the Site Director, who is in the Tie-dye or Bright yellow T-shirt.  Your runner will receive their bib at that time.  All runners are required to have a bib prior to racing.  Bibs should be pinned on the back of the runners' shirt for ease of removal in the finish chute.
  4. Each race night all runners can run two races.  A sprint followed by a mid-distance race.
  5. No parents or non-competing runners are allowed on the track with the runners.
  6. Following your runner's race, your child will find you in the designated parent viewing area.  You are free to stay and watch the remainder of the races or depart if so desired.
  7. Have fun and cheer for all runners because, “Finishing is Winning!”

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO FOR OUR COMMUNITY!
